Getting to Canberra
Fly into Canberra on one of many daily flights from other Australian capital cities.
Drive just 3 hours to reach Canberra from Sydney or 8 hours from Melbourne.
Take a train from Sydney’s Central Station. The daily service travels to Canberra via the Southern Highlands, Goulburn and Bungendore. Check timetables and book online through Transport NSW.
Catch a bus or hire a car with a driver. Murrays Coaches, Buses & Limousines, Greyhound Australia and Road Jet travel to Canberra.
Public transport in Canberra
Transport Canberra’s bus and light rail networks will get you around Canberra with ease.
Tickets
If you’re a regular traveller, buy a MyWay card. It will save you money and time. Order your card online through Transport Canberra, or in person from a MyWay Recharge Agent. When the funds on your card run low, you can top-up online or in person.
Light rail
Light rail is a quick way to travel between Civic and Gungahlin, via Braddon, Dickson and Lyneham.
Buses
Our clean and modern public bus network covers the city and all of Canberra’s suburbs. There are major stations in these areas:
- the CBD in Civic
- Gungahlin
- Belconnen
- Tuggeranong
- Woden
Blue Rapid or Red Rapid are Canberra’s main bus lines. They run at least every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm on weekends and frequently at other times. These services have carry racks for bikes.

Cycling
Canberra’s town centres are spread out, with parks and nature reserves in between. We have the largest network of cycle paths in Australia for you to explore.
You’ll often feel as though you’re in the countryside, even when you’re close to the centre of the city. It’s a beautiful city to ride around.
